cheers from the Czech Republic

Sat, 13 May 2017, 10:54 am: You’ll spy with your little eye a bit of the Czech Republic in the pleasant aftermath of a wine social here in Arcadia last night, and I have two of my favorite people on the continent to thank for it.20170513_105456That pack of colorful stick-ons is made by Tescoma, a Czech company originated in the town of Zlin in 1992 that soon opened branches in Slovakia, Italy, and Poland.20170513_105425Each pliable plastic piece is a different-colored sea creature with a suction cup. You affix it to your wine glass, and then you always know which glass is yours.

Yesterday after being sprung from the day job (’tis true, I still require exterior employment while “Matt, Take Me to Europe” incubates as a millionaire-maker) I had a few fellow teachers over to celebrate the weekend and to toast the impending out-of-state move of one of our own. It was the first occasion at my house where there were enough wine drinkers to necessitate some sort of “hey, is that my glass of white or his?” clarification system.

I have been to Prague seven times, but I’ve never found a Tescoma store or bought any of their products. These little pretties were a Christmas gift from Denisa and Martin, who live in Olomouc in the Czech Republic. (You’ll see them in many blog posts here in the future.) They spent the 2015 holidays with my family and me in Florida, stuffing my stocking with many delightful Czech kitchen tools and trinkets. Also thanks to them my supply of Czech soap and beer shampoo was restocked that Christmas. Still have plenty!

In the years that I don’t make it back to Prague, it’s wonderful to have small bits of my favorite city interspersed in my ’round-the-house life. From Christmas tree ornaments to bottles of liquor to paintings to random cute gifts from foreign loved ones, souvenirs keep the Czech Republic in my house when I can’t be in the Czech Republic. Dekuji, Denisa and Martin!20170513_105435I didn’t even have to stage it, but in addition to the Tescoma suction cup critters, there are two other Prague reminders in this photo. The small painting leaning against the wall was purchased in 2011 and is of some of the spires in the city, and the blue tumbler glasses at the top right are part of the crystal set we bought in Prague in 2013.

on site for The Stranglers’
BLACK AND WHITE tour

20160311_203410Fri, 11 March 2016, 7:42 pm: That sign over the stage at London’s 02 Brixton Academy confirms I’m in the right place… as if there were any doubt.

Though they won’t take the stage for a little while yet, I can feel The Stranglers’ presence in the air. I’m like Darth Vader picking up on Obi-Wan Kenobi being on the Death Star… if Obi-Wan represented the essence of British punk and if Vader were American and traipsing around on five hours of sleep in four days.20160311_194224After clearing security and having my printed-from-the-email ticket examined, the first thing I see inside the venue is the merch stall. Is it just me or is the vendor lady giving me the stink eye for taking a photo of her (above)?20160311_194232I buy the black and white BLACK AND WHITE shirt hanging in the middle: band pic on front, list of this tour’s dates and cities on back. I will wear it with pride, gleefully regaling anyone who asks with the epic tale of how I powered my American ass to three of those cities on three of those dates and had three once-in-a-lifetime concert experiences.20160311_203741Stepping through the doors into the concert arena itself, I am struck right away by the unique design of the room. The arches, the columns, the railings… it’s reminiscent of the Rialto Bridge in Venice.

20160311_203750Cool-looking as this place is, let’s be honest: There’s only one item of decor I need to see in order to know this is about to become one unforgettable night. 20160311_203627

Strangling the Hope and Anchor

Fri, 11 March 2016, 4:35 pm: After the concert by Stranglers cover band Straighten Out in the basement, I rubbed elbows with fellow Stranglers obsessives on the pub’s street level.20160311_163519The Hope & Anchor is an institution here in Camden Town, but it’s modern and trendy enough to host an array of newfangled beers in addition to the standard bearers.20160311_154302Here’s a poster advertising the gig I just saw a few minutes ago.20160311_154318And a listing of the month’s gigs, including today’s.20160311_154324All of us here right now will be rocking out together in a few hours as The Stranglers themselves prowl the 02 Brixton Academy stage. This afternoon is a chance to whet our appetites with The Stranglers’ most popular tribute band and a few pints.20160311_164116I have the extreme pleasure of meeting in person two Stranglers super fans I’ve previously known only on the internet forums: Elvis in the Clouds and Bag Lady (not pictured). Not a lot of time to linger, though: I’ve gotta Tube it back to my hotel to grab my ticket for tonight’s show and then hustle back across town to the venue.
